There is after all, the hydrogen cell, a means of turning water to gas which could dramatically reduce or even eliminate the cost of fuel. But, there is controversy here. While hydrogen cell technology has made some fairly impressive strides in the last 20 years, any seach online about the hydrogen cell will tell you that for every person that swears by it, there is another that proclaims it as a complete hoax.

So, what is the truth? Well, as with most things the truth comes out of knowledge and, an understanding of the facts.

Firstly, and quite aside from whether the technology actually works, or not, it must be remembered that in any discussion about the hydrogen cell, and alternate fuels in general, there are huge political and economic considerations that have to be included in the mix and, I would be remiss not to mention them here.

Take for example, the oil companies themselves. Oil production and exploration (with cancer reseach following a close second) is the biggest money maker on the planet today. With profits in the hundreds of billions every year, profits that eclipse the GNP of many countries, it would not be difficult to assume that, when faced with a viable and workable alternative, they may have something to say about it.

It is not my intention to delve too deeply into this area of discussion but, it is a well known fact that throughout the initial debate on the damaging effects of burning fossil fuels on the environment, there were a number of leading scientists that completely refuted the theory, insisting on rather the benign nature of burning oil.

It was then uncovered that many, if not all of these highly regarded scientists who were defending oil, were in fact on the payroll of the oil companies, the overall result of which put back the debate by as much as five years. Would it be a flight of fancy to suppose that at least a part of the argument against the viability of the hydrogen cell might be coming from those very same oil companies?

For my part I think not. On the contrary, if you can buy well known scientists, then the idea of hiring people to spread disinformation could be easily, cheaply and quite effectively done and, the economic benifit to the oil companies would be considerable.

Further, if this is the case and disinformation is indeed being circulated, then it can only speak volumes about the viability of the hydrogen cell and, that it is a system that is worth a look into.

Actually, it is the very nature of the hydrogen cell itself that could be the largest obstacle working against its development. Hydrogen is after all the most common element on our planet, a planet covered in water.

So, in terms of government development and support, there is that thorny issue of how do you tax the use of the most common element on the planet? How do you tax people running their cars on tap water? Quite simply, you don’t and of course that would mean a massive loss of tax revenue, a situation that no government would sanction.

And not only that, the fact is that the process of creating hydrogen gas really is quite simple and inexpensive, so the revenue gained from putting the system in place is very limited and, the fact is the only ones that would benefit from using the hydrogen cell are you, me and of course, the planet. Unfortunately, capitalism doesn’t work that way. If you can’t make money at it, it just won’t happen.

This all adds up to the fact that the hydrogen cell has got a lot of hurdles to jump. However, that does not mean it doesn’t work. On the contrary, one rarely sees opposition to something that is not worth opposing and, the hydrogen cell has faced a lot of opposition.

So, should you install a hydrogen cell in YOUR car?

This of course is not for me to say; only you can decide that. Personally I think the technology is exciting and could be hugely beneficial to the individual, the economy, by freeing up the vast amount of money that we are all currently giving to the oil companies and, last but certainly not least, the planet.
